Formed in 2001, the GVAA encompasses most of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Steuben, and Wyoming Counties in Western, New York.  The original goals of the GVAA were to organize the annual Genesee Valley Living History Weekend and to create a weekly league that would promote better competition for local atlatlists.

GVAA is a charter Affiliate Member Group of the New York Atlatl Association, Inc.  During the 2007 season the GVAA "Raging Mammoths" atlatl team won the inaugural regular season championship in the NYAA Team Atlatl League and placed second at the NYAA New York State Atlatl Championships.  Team members Douglas Bassett, Greg Bessette, and Mike Waters also recorded the highest team score achieved during the team regular season.

GVAA also had several state champions including Marlin Bassett (NYAA Individual State Champion - White Division, NYAA Hunter's Animal Round Champion - White Division, and NYAA Distance Throw Champion - White Division);  Greg Bessette (NYAA Individual State Champion - Red Division); Mindy Trumbul (NYAA Hunter's Animal Round Champion - Black Division and NYAA Distance Throw Champion - Black Division); Mike Waters  (NYAA Distance Throw Champion - Red Division); and Douglas Bassett (NYAA Distance Throw Champion - Yellow Division).
