                COMPETITION RULES

                       (Approved by the NYAA, Inc. Board of Directors – 27 January 2008)

 

I.          NYAA COMPETITION CHAIRMAN

1.                  The Board of Directors shall at the NYAA, Inc. Annual Fall Meeting or as soon thereafter as feasible, appoint a NYAA Competition Chairman for the following season.

2.                  The Competition Chairman will maintain team rosters, keep and publish the results of all competitions, establish the championship brackets based on the rules, oversee the championship, and handle all other matters necessary to the operation of the season.

3.                  The Competition Chairman will forward to the NYAA Secretary/Treasurer and to the NYAA website operator, all information regarding NYAA sponsored atlatl competitions.

4.                  The Competition Chairman will make all decisions regarding rules interpretation or other facets of NYAA sponsored atlatl competitions.

5.         The Competition Chairman (or a designated substitute) will confirm the eligibility of each  
            contestant at the NYAA, Inc. New York State Atlatl Championships, and will collect any
            participation fee(s) from non-NYAA member participants.

            6.         The Competition Chairman will issue an end of the season report to the  NYAA, Inc.Board
                        of Directors  at the NYAA Annual Fall Meeting, or as soon thereafter as feasible.

NYAA Competition Records

II.     NYAA TARGETS AND SCORE SHEETS

1.                  The Competition Chairman will have funding established in the NYAA budget for the purchase of targets for use in NYAA sponsored atlatl competitions.  The Competition Chairman will be responsible for providing necessary targets for each NYAA sponsored atlatl competition.

2.         The Competition Chairman will have score sheets available for all of the NYAA competition
            formats, which also can be downloaded from the NYAA and Atlatls-N-More websites. 
            Only official NYAA score sheets will be used for scoring at NYAA sponsored atlatl
            competitions.

 

III.    NYAA TEAM ATLATL STATE QUALIFYING AND CHAMPIONSHIP
         RULES

 

A.        NYAA TEAM ATLATL REQUIREMENTS

1.                     Teams will be limited to NYAA, Inc. Affiliate Member Groups, or to NYAA members.

   Each team will post a $15 entry fee with the NYAA Secretary/Treasurer by 15th April for  
   that competition season; each team will also file a roster of primary team members with the
   NYAA Competition Chairman by 15th April for that competition season and will include the
   team captain and the previous season’s high ISAC score for each primary team member for 
   the purposes of handicapping.

2.                     Teams will consist of NYAA Affiliate Group members, or NYAA members.  Non-members
   of NYAA may participate only as substitutes during the regular season.

            Teams will consist of three (3) atlatlists; the team captain and two (2) primary throwers. 
            Substitutes will be allowed, but at least one (1) primary team member must compete for that
            team’s score to be counted.  No team may have more than two (2) substitutes.

            A person listed as a primary team member for one team, may serve as a substitute for any
            team(s) during qualifying; however, that person may only substitute on one (1) other team at
            any given event.

                        The Competition Chairman will make available a complete list of teams and each team’s 
                        primary team members after 15th April, but prior to the start of the season for that competition
                        season.

3.            Each team will designate a captain whose duties shall be to file the primary team roster, file  
   the team entry fee, have the team prepared for competition (including the championship),
   and act as liaison to the Competition Chairman.

4.             A team must compete in a minimum of three (3) regular season qualifying competitions to
    qualify for the championship.


B.         NYAA TEAM ATLATL REGULAR SEASON QUALIFYING FORMAT

1.                  The target for competition will be a long range (10 point) archery target.

2.         Handicapping, based on each participant’s previous year’s high ISAC score, will be:

            a.         Handicap #1:  ISAC score 0-59           throw from 8, 10, 12, 15, and 18 meters.

            b.         Handicap #2:  ISAC score 60-75         throw from 10, 12, 15, 18, and 20 meters.

            c.         Handicap #3:  ISAC score 76-89         throw from 12, 15, 18, 20, and 22 meters.

            d.         Handicap #4:  ISAC score 90 or over  throw from15, 18, 20, 22, and 25 meters.

3.         Team members must compete as a group; it is not necessary to compete in direct competition against other teams during the regular season qualifying. Teams may compete only once during each regular season qualifying event, and all teams must compete during the scheduled dates and times of the regular season qualifying event.

4.         The scoring will be based on the numbers on the target.

            Each team member will throw two (2) darts from each distance as handicapped above.  A
            team with mixed handicaps will start with the atlatlist with the lowest handicap and proceed
            upward.  No rotation of the order should occur.  Teams may not score themselves.

            After throwing and scoring the six (6) team darts, the darts will be removed and the
            competitors will proceed to the next distance until completion of the round.

            The team score will be the aggregate scoring of the three (3) team members.  The team
            score(s) will be used to determine placement at each regular season qualifying event, and for
            championship bracketing.  
 

C.        NYAA TEAM ATLATL CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

1.                  Team atlatl regular season qualifying scores will be used to bracket teams for the
            championship, based on the average of each team’s three (3) highest qualifying scores.  If an
            odd number of teams qualify for the championship, byes will be given to equal out the   
            bracketing.  The Competition Chairman will establish and publicize the championship      
            bracketing.

2.         The championships will be based on direct competition between bracketed teams, with the
            winning team advancing until a championship team is determined.  Teams may not score
            themselves.

3.         A competitor may compete on one (1) team only during the championship. Eligible substitutes -
            either NYAA members or non-members of NYAA who have paid a $5 championship   
            participation fee may compete for one (1) team only (they cannot be a primary team member
            of any other competing team).  No team may have more than two (2) substitutes.

4.                  The championship will follow the regular season qualifying format, with the following exceptions:

a.                   The official scorer will toss a coin to determine which team has the choice of throwing first or second.

b.                  The first team will throw their six (6) darts which will be scored and removed; the second team will then throw likewise.  Teams will follow this order until the competition is complete.

c.                   The team championship score will be the aggregate team scoring for the championship event only.  Team scores will be used to determine which team is eliminated and which team will proceed to the next round, until the competition is complete and a winner is determined.  Scores must be turned in to the Competition Chairman (or his designate) immediately upon completion of each championship round.

5.                  NYAA, Inc. will present the NYAA New York State Team Atlatl Championship Trophy to the winning team at the NYAA, Inc. Annual Fall Meeting.  The winning team will retain the trophy until the next championship.

 

IV.   NYAA INDIVIDUAL ATLATL STATE QUALIFYING AND CHAMPIONSHIP
        RULES

 

A.        NYAA INDIVIDUAL ATLATL REGULAR SEASON QUALIFYING FORMAT

1.         The target for competition will be a long range (10 point) archery target.

2.         Handicapping, based on each participant’s previous year’s high ISAC score, will be:

            a.         Handicap #1:    ISAC score 0-50                throw from 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15, meters        
            b.         Handicap #2:    ISAC score 51 and above  throw from10, 12, 15, 18, and 20 meter

 

3.         Five divisions, based on the colors of the target, will be used for regular season qualifying; the
            divisions are White, Black, Blue, Red, and Yellow.

            Persons with Handicap #1 will be placed in either the White or Black division, based on their
            regular season qualifying score(s).  A regular season qualifying score of 0-50 will constitute the
            White Division, and a regular season qualifying score of 51 and above will constitute the Black
            Division.  A regular season qualifying score of 100 and above will allow the individual to
            compete at the Handicap #2 level, if they so choose.

            Persons with Handicap #2 will be placed in either the Blue, Red, or Yellow division, based on
            their regular season qualifying score(s).  A regular season  qualifying score of 0-89 will
            constitute the Blue Division, a regular season qualifying score of 90-114 will constitute the
            Red Division, and a regular season qualifying score of 115 and above will constitute the Yellow 
            Division.

4.         Each competitor will throw three (3) darts from each of the five (5) distances according to their
            handicap, for a total of fifteen (15) total darts.  The score for each competitor will be the
            aggregate score of the fifteen (15) darts.

            After each competitor’s darts are thrown and scored the three (3) darts, the darts will be
            removed.

            At least two (2) throwers must compete in a regular season qualifier.  There is no maximum
            number of competitors per event.  Competitors may throw as many qualifiers as desired, but
            only one (1) per day at each NYAA sponsored event.  Competitors may not score themselves.

   5.         Individual atlatl regular season qualifying scores will be used to seed competitors in each  
   division for the championships, and individuals may only compete in the division for which they 
   have qualified.  The Competition Chairman will establish and publicize the championship      
   seeds for each division. 

B.         NYAA INDIVIDUAL ATLATL CHAMPIONSHIPS FORMAT

1.         Three (3) to five (5) atlatlists will compete in each flight where applicable in each of the
            divisions.  The order of competition by division will be White, Black, Blue, Red, and Yellow.  
            The higher seeds in each division will throw together at the championships where more than
            five (5) competitors have  qualified in given division, with lower seeds (where needed) throwing
            first.  Competitors will rotate through the flight.

2.         The championship will follow the regular season qualifying format, with the following exception:

      a.         A competitor may only throw once.

3.         NYAA, Inc. will present a NYAA New York State Individual Atlatl Championship plaque to 
            the winning atlatlist in each division at the NYAA, Inc. Annual Fall Meeting. 

 

V.  NYAA DISTANCE THROW STATE QUALIFYING AND CHAMPIONSHIP
      RULES

 

A.        GENERAL

            1.         The NYAA Distance Throw requires a suitable and safe area for competition.  An area
                        approximately 200 meters in length and 60 meters in width, without obstructions, is generally
                        required.  The Competition Chairman (or his designate) must approve that area for
                        competition.

B.         NYAA DISTANCE THROW REGULAR SEASON QUALIFYING FORMAT

1.                  Each competitor may use any type(s) of atlatl(s) and dart(s), in any combination.  Each competitor may throw on any, or all, days at any NYAA sponsored event holding a Distance Throw State Qualifier.

2.                  Each competitor may throw up to ten (10) darts, consecutively, for a qualifying distance.  Non-consecutive distances will not be scored.  A competitor may use the same dart more than once, however, they must wait until all other competitors have finished the flight before retrieval.

3.         The longest distance for each competitor will be the qualifying distance for division assignments
            at the championship.  Competitors may not score themselves.

4.         All distances will be measured perpendicular to an established centerline.  Marker stakes will
            be set at 30 meter intervals to facilitate measuring, with all measurements rounded to the
            nearest whole meter.

5.         The longest distance throw regular season qualifying score will be used to seed each competitor
            in a division for the championships. The Competition Chairman will establish and publicize the
            championship seeds for each division.

            White Division              less than 30 meters
            Black Division              30 to 59 meters
            Blue Division                60 to 89 meters
            Red Division                 90 to 119 meters
            Yellow Division            120 meters and above

B.         NYAA DISTANCE THROW CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

1.                  Three (3) or more atlatlists will compete in each flight, with the White, Black, and Blue divisions separate from the Red and Yellow divisions, as applicable.

2.                  The championship will follow the regular season qualifying format, with the following exceptions:

a.                   Each competitor may throw up to five (5) darts only for scoring and the darts must be thrown consecutively within the flight.

b.         The longest distance throw for each competitor will be used for championship
            placement within the division the competitor qualified for, regardless of the competitor’s
            championship distance(s).

3.         NYAA, Inc. will present a NYAA New York State Distance Throw Championship plaque to
            the winning atlatlist in each division at the NYAA, Inc. Annual Fall Meeting. 

 

VI.       NYAA HUNTER’S ANIMAL ROUND STATE QUALIFYING AND
            CHAMPIONSHIP RULES

 

A.        NYAA HUNTER’S ANIMAL ROUND TARGETS

            1.         The Hunter’s Animal Round will consist of five (5) targets; coyote, turkey, bobcat, fox, and
                        raccoon.

            2.         Each animal target is divided into six (6) colored zones as follows:

                        a.         Heart                           Yellow               12 points
                        b.         Lung/Liver/Spleen        Orange                8 points
                        c.         Brain/Spinal Cord         Red                    5 points
                        d.         Body                            Grey                   1 point
                        e.         Extremities                    Dotted line        - 1 point
                        f.          Entrails                         Inner Grey        - 3 points                               

B.         NYAA HUNTER’S ANIMAL ROUND REGULAR SEASON QUALIFYING FORMAT 

1.                  Handicapping, based on the previous year’s high ISAC score will be:

 

            a.         ISAC score 0-50               throw from 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 meters
            b.         ISAC score 51and above   throw from 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 meters
 

2.                  Each competitor will throw one (1) dart at each of the five (5) targets,

            proceeding through the course three (3) times, for a total of fifteen (15)

            darts.  Competitors may attempt to qualify once each day at each NYAA

            sponsored event where the Hunter’s Animal Round is held.

 

3.                  A flight must consist of a minimum of three (3) atlatlists, with a maximum

            of five (5) atlatlists.  Competitors may not score themselves.

 

4.                  The throwing distances by division will be as follows:

5.                  Only one (1) qualifying score is necessary to qualify for the championships.

 

6.                  Persons with Handicap #1 will be placed in either the White or Black division, based on their
regular season qualifying score(s).  A regular season qualifying score of 0-15 will constitute the
White Division, and a regular season qualifying score of 16 and above will constitute the Black
Division.  A regular season qualifying score of 31 and above will allow the individual to
compete at the Handicap #2 level, if they so choose.

            Persons with Handicap #2 will be placed in either the Blue, Red, or Yellow division, based on
            their regular season qualifying score(s).  A regular season  qualifying score of 0-15 will
            constitute the Blue Division, a regular season qualifying score of 16-30 will constitute the
            Red Division, and a regular season qualifying score of 31 and above will constitute the Yellow 
            Division.

C.                 NYAA HUNTER’S ANIMAL ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

                 

1.         Competitors in each division will throw together in a flight; multiple divisions may throw
            together in a flight where appropriate. 

 

2.         More than one (1) flight may compete on the course at the same time

            provided a rotation of two (2) targets is maintained between flights.

 

3.          The championship will follow the regular season qualifying format.

4.         NYAA, Inc. will present a NYAA New York State Hunter’s Animal Round Championship 
            plaque to the winning atlatlist in each division at the NYAA, Inc. Annual Fall Meeting.
 

VII.     NYAA EUROPEAN ROUND STATE QUALIFYING AND
           CHAMPIONSHIP RULES

 

A.        NYAA EUROPEAN ROUND TARGETS

                                               throw from 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, and 26 meters

            2.         Each competitor will throw one (1) dart from each of the ten (10) distances according to their
                        handicap, and proceeding through the course three (3) times for a total of thirty (30) darts. 
                        Competitors may attempt to qualify once each day at each NYAA sponsored event where the
                        European Round is held.

             3.        A flight must consist of a minimum of three (3) atlatlists, with a maximum of five (5) atlatlists. 
                        Competitors may not score themselves.

 4.        The scoring will be the total number of hits divided by thirty (30), times the

            total points scored divided by one hundred fifty (150), times one hundred (100).

            Rounding for each fraction will be to the nearest tenth (1/10).

 

            (Example: a competitor scores 15 hits with a point total of 75; 15/30 X 75/150 X 100 =

            0.5 X 0.5 X 100 = 0.25 X 100 = 25.  Example: a competitor scores 20 hits with a

            point total of 95; 20/30 X 95/150 X 100 = 0.67 X 0.63 X 100 = 0.42 X 100 = 42).

 

 5.        Only one (1) qualifying score within the assigned division is necessary to qualify for the
championships.

 

 6.        Persons with Handicap #1 will be placed in either the White or Black division, based on their
regular season qualifying score(s).  A regular season qualifying score of 0-29 will constitute the
White Division, and a regular season qualifying score of 30 and above will constitute the Black
Division.  A regular season qualifying score of 70 and above will allow the individual to
compete at the Handicap #2 level, if they so choose.

            Persons with Handicap #2 will be placed in either the Blue, Red, or Yellow division, based on
            their regular season qualifying score(s).  A regular season  qualifying score of 0-19 will
            constitute the Blue Division, a regular season qualifying score of 20-44 will constitute the
            Red Division, and a regular season qualifying score of 45 and above will constitute the Yellow 
            Division.

C.        NYAA EUROPEAN ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

1.                  Competitors in each division will throw together in a flight; multiple divisions may throw together
in a flight where appropriate.

 

2.                  The championship will follow the regular season qualifying format.

 

3.         For the 2008 season the NYAA European Round will be an exhibition competition only
            NYAA, Inc. will not award championship plaques for the division winners, however certificates
            will be awarded to all championship participants.

 

VIII.    NYAA NEW YORK STATE ATLATL CHAMPIONSHIPS

1.                  The NYAA New York State Atlatl Championships will held on the second full weekend each
August (or two weeks prior to the Letchworth Stone Tool Show and Eastern Seaboard Atlatl Championships).

 

2.                  Any NYAA Affiliate Member Group or NYAA individual member may

            request to host the championships, and will apply for such by issuing a

            proposal to the NYAA, Inc. Board of Directors prior to 1 January of that

            year.  If more than one (1) proposal is received, the Board of Directors

            will determine the host and location for the championships from the proposals.

 
3.         Atlatlists who are not members of NYAA may compete in all individual championships formats,
            or as a substitute in the team competition, by paying a championship participation fee of five
            dollars ($5.00) to the NYAA Competition Chairman prior to the start of competition.  No fee
             is required from NYAA members.
